Program Overview: The danceLogic program at West Park Cultural Center combines the art of dance with computer coding, providing girls aged 10 through their teens with a unique opportunity to develop original choreography and performance skills while learning industry-standard computer programming.

Position Summary: We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Volunteer Assistant Coding Instructor to support our danceLogic program. This role involves working closely with the Lead Instructor to provide instruction and individual assistance to approximately 12-15 girls, helping them to not only learn coding but also to build confidence and creativity. The ideal candidate will have a passion for coding and a desire to inspire and mentor young girls.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Lead Instructor in delivering coding lessons and activities.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students during coding sessions.
  • Work closely with the dance instructors to integrate dance and coding concepts, enhancing students’ understanding of how these disciplines intersect.
  • Incorporate movement, visual thinking, and real-world examples to enhance students’ problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Give students a compelling reason to engage in difficult tasks by finding the spark that inspires them and keeps them invested in their projects.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages creativity and teamwork.

Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of computer programming languages (e.g., Swift, HTML, Python, JavaScript, Scratch).
  • Experience working with children or teens.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team.
  • Patience, creativity, and a positive attitude.
  • PA Child Abuse Clearance and Background Check.

Time Commitment:

  • The program runs on Saturdays 10:00 am – 12:45 pm from October to the second Saturday in June with dance taking place from 10:00 am – 11:20 am followed by coding. The coding volunteer time commitment is 11:00 am – 12:45 pm. Volunteers are expected to commit to regular weekly attendance.
