Nature Study

Fairmount Park is home to a complex local ecosystem. Campers assembled into specialized groups to investigate various aspects of the life of Fairmount Park. Our field study groups were: Birds, Insects, Trees, and Other Living Things. Once they had observed and identified their subjects using field guide books, campers created water color paintings of what they observed and made some notes on what they had learned.

Flower Dissection

At the Horticultural Center, we were surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers. By dissecting a Lily Alstromeria flower, campers discovered the inner-workings of the flower and learned that a flower performs an important job for a plant. The flower is the reproductive organ of the plant. Flowers are pretty and smell good because they need to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. When a flower is pollinated, it’s ovary and ovules begin to grow into a fruit containing seeds. The seeds will one day grow into a new plant! Campers identified and charted each part of the flower.

Painting in progress

After viewing a large book of Georgia O’Keefe’s flower paintings, we went into the green house to sketch in preparation for our own flower paintings. Here Amaiya is, beginning to work on her canvas.

Color Wheel

The color wheel is an excellent tool for making color choices in painting. There are only three colors that the human eye can perceive: the primary colors. Colors made from equal components of two primary colors are called secondary colors. On the color wheel, each primary color is located opposite it’s complementary secondary color. Opposite colors look good together because of color contrast.

Commercial Project

The students learned about advertising and used their theatre/film acting skills that we previously worked on to create their own commercial advertisement. The students were given some guidelines, such as to include persuasive techniques, a price, and creativity aspects; but the entirety of the commercials were created and invented by the students. I was very impressed of the effort and creativity they all used.
